The naming of the actual peak located in Northwestern Colorado and Southern Wyoming was quite the scandal back in the day. In the 1870's just after the railroad was completed an Easterner came west with a bag of diamonds. The railroad brought him to Rock Spring Wyoming where he sought out a mountain and planted the diamonds all across the high desert hillsides. The gentleman then conned investors to purchase shares in this diamond field. After a handful of shares were sold the easterner vanished with all the money and that's how Diamond Peak got its name.
